Kui Buri National Park stands as a beacon of biodiversity, nurturing one of Thailand’s largest populations of gaurs and elephants. As of 2016, the park was a haven for approximately 320 elephants and a significant population of around 100 gaurs. However, the journey hasn’t been without its challenges. In December 2013, a tragic incident occurred where 24 gaurs were found dead due to a bacterial infection. This led to the closure of the park for eight months, reopening in August 2014. Since then, the park has witnessed a promising recovery, with a herd of 70 gaurs spotted near a ranger station, indicating a resurgence in the population.

Bird enthusiasts will find themselves in paradise, with the park hosting an impressive array of over 260 bird species and possibly many more yet to be discovered. From the vibrant crested firebacks and grey peacock pheasants to the melodious calls of mustached hawk-cuckoos and rufous-collared kingfishers, the park is a symphony of nature’s finest melodies. Not to forget, the daily sightings of cattle egrets gracefully accompany elephant herds, adding to the park’s vibrant ecosystem.

The reptilian life in the park is equally fascinating, with around 60 known species making their home here. This includes the striking red-headed kraits, the elusive Pope’s pit vipers, and the agile dog-toothed cat snakes. The park also shelters various species of tortoises and lizards, including the elongated tortoises and Burmese green lizards, adding to the rich tapestry of wildlife that thrives here.
